LMDGP rounds off 'Keep Your Environment Clean' campaign

LMDGP – Lagos Metropolitan Development and Governance Project –  is a world bank assisted initiative of the Lagos State Govt. Recently, the project embarked on a massive communication campaign, with road shows and through mass media, to sensitize Lagosians in general, and its slum area communities in particular, about the urgent need to deviate from behaviors & attitudes hazardous to the numerous facilities already provided  under its ‘slum upgrade’ intervention projects.

Now, it is important, that with these new public utility infrastructures in place, the public should take ownership, and maintain these facilities. The slum areas covered in Lagos State include: Agege, Orile Agege, Ajegunle, Amukoko, Badia, Iwaya, Makoko, Ilaje, Bariga and Ijeshatedo/Itire. Continue...

The intervention projects include provision and rehabilitation of roads, drainage systems, Primary Health Care Centers, primary and secondary schools, water supply boreholes, market stalls, electricity transformers, etc; that have improved life in many ways for these slum communities.

In a statement, the Project Director, Mr Dayo Oguntunde, highlighted the impact and success of LMDGP intervention projects. 'From Layinka Street in Ajegunle to Kabiyesi, Igun, Ogunfeyitibi, Oluwashina, Itire/Ijesha, Oremerin, Oduselu streets in Mushin – all in Lagos West, to Oremeji, Salimotu, Oyewole, Ajiboye, Olagoke, Soretire, Church, Oguntade, Tabon-Tabon, Oke-Koto, Alagba streets – in Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, to Anjorin, Labaka, Alfia, Fatai Bello, Muri Ojora, Aniyalaoye/Edidi in Amukoko, Ifelodun Local Council Development Area, there are visible signs of development in both urban centres and rural hinterlands.'

The project objective remains to increase sustainable access to basic urban service through the investments in critical infrastructures. Progress towards achieving the objective of the project will be measured through: increase in the percentage of population with access to safe water in the selected slums, reduction in the percentage of household reporting flooding in the local governments where selected drains basins lie and increase in the percentage of generated garbage in Lagos that arrives for disposal at landfill among others.

Before the intervention of the LMDGP projects the various slum communities in the State were continuously being lined with garbage, dirt and various types of waste thus jeopardizing the realization of the project objectives. This had both environmental and health hazards. The blocked run-off water and stagnant water do not only make the environment stink but increases the chances of flooding and increased sanitation issues.

The intervention of LMDGP in the nine slum communities in terms of provision of facilities and critical infrastructure, is bringing the great relief to the slum dwellers. This in turn had changed the physical outlook of the nine slum areas and the social and economic lives of these slum dwellers are being upgraded. With the provision of facilities and infrastructure in these slum communities, the sustainability of the infrastructure is important for the continued upgrade of the slum areas. The people have to be involved in the sustainability and there must be a sense of belonging.

In this regard, an environmental campaign towards sensitizing the slum communities for ‘the Cleanest Street Competition’ was organized as an opportunity for individuals and groups of the community to display/highlight the product of their slum upgrade and clean-up efforts. The competition was aimed at changing the behavior of people from passive to active attitude to help maintain the good usage of public utility infrastructure. Some of the key action points judged was: which street had stopped blocking drainages and gutters with litter and illegal structures, carries out the compulsory state weekly ‘clean up’ exercise, stopped the destruction of roads with burning tires, cooking fires, etc. and stopped disposing of human waste on the streets. This is a very important message for ‘Lagosians’ at the moment, especially in a world where environmental issues have become a global concern.

The ‘Keep Your Environment Clean’ campaign was concluded in a grand finale event that featured the ‘Cleanest Street Competition’ results. The overall cleanest was won by Arumoh Street, in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, while seven streets across others project communities were declared runners up. The star prize includes a complete street make over, provided by Berger Paints Ltd, the official sponsor of the competition.

Announcing the winners, Lagos State Governor, Babutubde Raji Fashola, noted the LMDGP in partnership with Berger Paints Nigeria PLC, the official sponsor of the event would paint all houses on the winning streets.
The Governor who commended the partnership between LMDGP and Berger paints restated the State Government’s commitment to the life and welfare of the slum areas at the grand finale of the ‘Keep Your Environment Clean Campaign’ and maintained that it is the obligation of the slum area dwellers to manage the facilities provided by LMDGP.

See Me See Trouble Oh: Actors and Actresses Fighting For Jonathan's 3 Billion Naira

Nollywood as an industry has become another theatre of the absurd by the happenings in the last three months since the president announced the grant at the State House Marina Lagos. It has been accusations, counter accusations, suspicion, lies and falsehood.

In well structured and organised industries, the associations, guilds practitioners and stakeholders will engage and create inter and intra mechanisms to access the grant for members. Sadly, that is not the case; but internal wrangling and accusations over a fund that has not been released. Prior to the announcement of the grant and the appointment of Ministry of Finance as the ministry charged with preparing guidelines for the disbursement of the grant.

In the last week, it has been a barrage of emails from different stakeholders to the ministry on why the guidelines released for the capacity building trench of the grant is fraught with irregularities and why it should not be implemented. According to this group, the conditions set in the guidelines were unacceptable to them, while another group seemed satisfied with the guidelines. As a major stakeholder in Nollywood, I have arrived at the conclusion that Nollywood is like the Israelite who in the Bible keep complaining even when God shows them love.

Of all the sectors in the creative industry, Nollywood remains the first and only industry in the history of the Nigerian state to be so supported with a grant; yet they are not contented. The internal fighting has extended to the coordinating ministry where petitions are being sent daily on why they do not need the grant or why it should not be executed. Any reader of this column will wonder if they were no consultations before the release of the guidelines by the Ministry of Finance. The fact is that they were consultations individually or collectively.

I will start with a brief background: A committee was set up to draft the guidelines for the disbursement of the grant on distribution, production and capacity building and this committee had representatives of the industry which included Prince Jide Kosoko, Dr. Umar Faruk, Stephanie Okereke and Amaka Igwe amongst other committee members from the Ministry of Finance, World Bank, British Council, Ministry of Culture, Censors Board amongst others. The committee met for weeks and then, the industry representatives were told to liaise with their colleagues on a major core component of the grant which is distribution and the driver of the other two components of the grant. At the focus group meeting of a select group of intellectuals within the industry, key decisions and suggestions were reached on the core needs of the industry in the area of distribution.

The focus group, that was broad based and cut across the industry, was condemned by a few who felt they should have been invited and because they were not invited, the recommendations and suggestions were not tenable even when some of the guild and association heads were part of the focus group. Based on the complaints, the Minister of Finance requested for an industry town hall meeting where relevant guilds and association in Nollywood were invited to review, contribute, suggest and fine tune the draft document. The town hall meeting was held at the Eko Hotel, Lagos, where the minister gave a week extension to the industry to make contributions to the draft document.

Ironically, immediately the guidelines were released, a small group of Nollywood stakeholders under the aegis of “Nollywood Summit” who were fully involved in both the focus meeting or the town hall meeting called a rather strange summit to condemn and discredit the N3bn as inadequate to meet the needs of the industry. This argument I consider weak because grants are support initiatives and the industry has survived without grants so saying it is too small makes no sense.

The second argument by organisers of the “Nollywood Summit” is that the assessors of the grants should be made public. But global practices for award of grants do not make public assessors for obvious reasons. Another weak argument by the group was that the grants should be given to the guilds and association to administer; this is laughable because an industry that has over 30 associations and guilds, which amongst these will manage it? Reacting to the Nollywood Summit communiqué, a statement from the ministry last week said those who were not interested in the grant can seek support elsewhere.

When I look at those behind the Nollywood summit, I sympathise with a majority who attended the summit out of ignorance –most of them have come out to disassociate themselves saying they were deceived about the motive of the gathering which was championed by a few failed producers and bankrupt marketers.

Majority of stakeholders are simply waiting to start accessing the grant which will go a long way in developing Nollywood.

Miley Cyrus, Wrecking Ball, Lorde

Miley Cyrus may be duking it out with Lorde on the iTunes charts, but it's the pop star's fans who took the battle to Twitter. After Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" was knocked out of the top spot by Lorde's "Royals" on Thursday, Sept. 19, the former Hannah Montana star's fans waged war on the New Zealander.
"Kill yourself you crusty old hag," one user told Lorde. Another added, "Your eyes are too far apart."

NEWS: Lorde steals Miley Cyrus' No. 1 spot and causes an uproar
Lorde, 16, was the first to admit that the tweets were a little alarming. "wo #1 on US itunes. even if it lasts an hour i feel HAPPY," she wrote. "downside is all these miley fans telling me they're gonna stab my rotting corpse." Ironically, just last month, Lorde praised Cyrus' second single from Bangerz, writing, "new miley is SO on point with verse and pre-chorus melodies."
Cyrus, 20, addressed her fans' behavior on Sept. 19 by tweeting at Lorde directly. "why r people so mean???" she asked. "Ps your music is awesome."

She's not the only one who thinks so: Lena Dunham praised the pop star on Monday, Sept. 16, tweeting, "Wait, Lorde is 16!? She MAY still be a royal! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW AT THAT AGE."
Lorde asked the Girls star if she was being mean, to which Dunham replied, "Not at ALL. I'm massively impressed by you and what you do and when I found out how old you are I almost fell over. Brava!"

Stop encouraging corruption, President Jonathan tells Nigerians

While addressing the 54th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Economic Summit that held in Abuja yesterday, president Goodluck Jonathan blamed the level of corruption in Nigeria on the society. He said instead of punishing corrupt people, we reward them.
“When you talk about corruption, the private sector is involved; the public sector is involved; even the individuals, including other societies, and I wouldn’t want to mention names so that I will not be attacked. But I know that if collectively all of us don’t reward corruption, people would not be attracted to corrupt practices, but when we all reward corruption, then of course, we will be tempted to go in that direction.
“I want a society where all of us will frown against people who come up with what they are not supposed to have. If a young man who just started a job and within six months or a year comes up with a car of N7m to N15m and you clap for him, then you are rewarding corruption." the president said. More when you continue...

“So for us as a nation to bring corruption down in Nigeria, it’s not just blaming government or blaming police, but all individuals must frown at people who have what they are not supposed to have, who live in houses they supposed not to live in; who drive cars they are not supposed to drive and who wear suits more expensive they can afford.

“And until we, as Nigerians are able to do this, then invariably we are all rewarding corruption and until we stop that, I don’t think we will get to where we want to go. We believe that we should not create an environment where people would be tempted to take what belongs to the public because that is why even in the fertilizer business we talked about electronic wallet, e-Wallet, so that funds are not exposed to corrupt people"

OAP Matse Uwatse releases statement after sack from Nigerian Info

Some of you may have heard that popular Radio Personality Matse Uwatse Nnoli was fired from her job at radio station, Nigerian Info, two years after moving to the station from Wazobia FM where she worked for many years. There have been reports in the media that Matse was fired because 'she lacked discipline and couldn't be called to order'. Matse says this portrayal of her person is totally false and has released a statement exclusively to LIB. Find it below...
Dear all, compliments of the day to you.
I believe a lot of you must have heard of the recent termination of my job as an OAP (On Air Personality) on 99.3 Nigeria Info Fm. Well, it is true.
I have read on several blogs that I was sacked for being arrogant, rude etc. Even recently that I lacked discipline. If I lacked discipline, I wouldn't be successful in my career. I believe discipline, integrity and honesty goes hand in hand with true success. Ask those who  have met and known me and they will tell you that this is what I live for. I am not perfect, I have made mistakes but who is perfect?
I prefer to be silent on matters like this but since silence is assumed to be consent, I will not consent to my hard earned reputation being dragged to the gutters. I worked too hard for it.
On the 2nd of September 2013 while on admission at First Consultant Medical Centre, Lagos. I received an email while on my sick bed, announcing my termination. Honestly, I was not angry but a bit shocked. I had been too sick lately due to my pregnancy and was not at my best but I expected my company to be supportive of me. Yes, I wanted them to be supportive of me because I had worked hard over the years to bring them much glory.
I know that I will see all sorts of articles and comments to discredit me but I simply ask this of you all. If you have ever met me and I was unpleasant to you, feel free to vent but If you don't know the real me and all you have heard are insinuations, hold your peace.
I love people and always wish them well. My mentees and honest colleagues will testify to this.I love progress because I believe the sky is  big enough for all the birds to fly. AIM Consultants. I am not mad at you. I believe when one door closes, another one opens. I have served you well over the years, brought you accolades. So please, let me go in peace and insiders in the Organisation who do not like guts should not use it as an opportunity to tear me down. I am a good person and YOU
ALL KNOW THIS!
God bless AIM Consultants, I learnt a lot from you and I am grateful. God bless us all!
Matse Uwatse Nnoli
