Armed and dangerous' Michael David Elliot who escaped from a Michigan Prison

A massive manhunt is underway for an “armed and dangerous” murderer who escaped from a Michigan prison Sunday, and authorities fear he may have made it to Indiana after he carjacked a woman.

Hundreds of officers from multiple agencies are hunting for Michael David Elliot, who broke out from a “secure area” at the Ionia Correctional Facility and then carjacked an older woman using either a knife or box cutter, said Michigan State Police Lt. Mardella Horhn, who described him as "armed and dangerous."

With the woman still in the car, he crossed the state line into Indiana, drove two hours and pulled over for gas in Elkhart County, Ind. The woman managed to escape to a bathroom, where she called the police at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, Horhn added. She was not hurt.

Elliot took off in her red 2004 Jeep Liberty with Michigan license plate 5FTG55, Horhn said. It has a black grill cover on the front and a spare tire on the rear. It also has animal stickers in the back window.

Police think Elliot had enough fuel to get about 100 miles. Authorities don’t have any indication in which direction he may be headed. He is believed to be alone.

He is described as a 5-foot-8, 165-pound white male with brown hair and eyes. He was wearing a blue and orange state prison uniform when he escaped, but was last seen in a blue jacket and black trousers, which he took from the Jeep.

Elliot was given life terms for the murder of four people in 1993, according to his MDOC profile.
He has gone by the names Michael D. Delarosa, Michael David Delarosa and Michael David Shreader in the past, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.
