A
tricyclist, who allegedly caused the death of a retired custom officer, Ibukun
Oniremi, was on Thursday charged before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court
in Lagos.
The
accused, 25-year-old Akeem Adeoye is facing a charge of manslaughter.
The
prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu said the accused committed the offence on Jan.
20 at 10.00 a.m. on Marwa Road, Ijegun, a Lagos suburb.
According
to him, the accused hit the deceased’s car with his tricycle in the traffic.
“The
deceased came out of his car with his belt to flog the accused.
“The
accused in a bid to avoid the lashes pushed the deceased to the fast lane and
was crushed by an oncoming truck marked BG 89 KNN.’’
Nwosu
noted that the offence contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos
State, 2011.
The
tricyclist pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In
his remarks, the Magistrate, Mr Tunbosun Abolarinwa, said the accused should be
charged with manslaughter and not murder earlier preferred against him since he
did not intentionally kill the man.
“The
accused did not deliberately kill the man, but was only defending himself.’’
He
granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Abolarinwa
adjourned the case to March 3 for further hearing.
